Diagnostics

Warnings spelled out, a latency test for your network, and a check that jumps are landing on the bar.

Downstage 0.9.0 · updated 13 Oct 2026

Backstage › Diagnostics is where to look when something feels off, and what to run when you set up in a new venue.

Warnings

When something about your set or setup needs attention, a chip appears at the top of the show screen — 1 warning — and this is where it is spelled out. Tapping the chip brings you straight to the tab where it can be fixed.

WarningWhat to do
Launch quantisation is offJumps are happening instantly instead of on the bar. Set it to 1 Bar in Live. This one is red, because it changes what a tap does.
Two locators share a nameRename one in Live. A setlist cannot tell them apart.
SONG END is off the bar lineThe songs named are being cut short by the amount shown. Move each marker onto a bar line.
The setlist runs over its slotDrop or shorten something, or change the slot.

When there is nothing to fix, it says so.

Latency test

Run latency test sends 50 messages from the device you are holding to Live and back, and reports how long they took.

RowWhat it measures
This device → Live → backThe whole journey of a tap. This is the figure that matters.
Mac → Live → MacLive's own share. Live checks for messages about ten times a second, so this is never much below 50 ms and cannot be made faster.
This device → Mac (network)The network's share. This is the part a better router improves.

It passes if 95% of round trips finish in under 150 ms. If it fails, the verdict says which part is to blame. A slow network row means the Wi-Fi: use the 5 GHz band, move the router closer, or bring your own router instead of using the venue's.

Latency is not timing. These numbers are how long a tap takes to reach Live. They do not affect whether a jump lands in time — Live makes every jump on its own bar line. A slow network means a jump you asked for late in a bar might land a bar later; it cannot make one land off the beat.

Run the test from the iPad, in the place it will sit on stage, on the network you will play on.

Last jump

Under the latency results, Downstage reports how close to the bar line the most recent jump actually fired: on the bar line: about 0.03 beats late, at bar 12. Play something, tap another song, and look here to confirm that jumps are being quantised.

Good to know

The tab ends with two reminders: how to stop the iPad sleeping, and the laptop's keyboard shortcuts.
