Notes in {braces}

Two kinds of note — one beside a section, one under a song's title — and where each is written.

Downstage 0.9.0 · updated 13 Oct 2026

A note is a few words for the people on stage: which guitar, who starts, when to talk to the crowd. Downstage has two kinds.

Section notes: in the name, in braces

Add a note to a section by putting it in curly braces in the section's name — on the SECTIONS clip or the > locator:

Instrumental {acoustic gtr only}

Downstage shows Instrumental as the section's name and acoustic gtr only beside it, smaller, wherever sections are listed.

  • The note can go anywhere in the name; {full band} Last chorus works too.
  • It lives in your Live set, so it travels with the set and is the same at every gig.
  • If you ask Downstage to add section locators, the note goes into the locator's name with it.

Song notes: in Backstage

A song's note is written in Downstage rather than in Live. Open Backstage › Setlists, find the song and press + Add note.

Capo 2 · keys patch 14

It appears under the song's title on the show screen and on the band view while that song is playing.

  • One line, up to 200 characters.
  • A note belongs to the song, not to a setlist: Capo 2 is true whichever gig the song is in, so it shows in every setlist that includes it.
  • On a short window the note is the first thing to make room for the controls. It always shows on the band view.

Braces only mean something in a section's name. A song's locator name is shown exactly as you typed it, braces and all.
